Accessible guesthouse

The Miggi aims to be a special, accessible place where all our guests can feel welcome, accepted, safe, and comfortable.

Parking and Entrance

There is parking at the front of the house. We can’t guarantee there will be enough spaces available for all guests – when there is a shortage, we will prioritise guests with mobility issues. Let us know when you book and we will reserve the space nearest to the house for you.

There are two steps up to our front door. We have a fold-out ramp which we will put out for wheelchair and scooter users. There are no further steps once you are inside the house.

Porch

You will come into a light, bright porch. Immediately opposite is a wide sliding door that leads to a wheelchair-accessible toilet which is available to all visitors.

To the right, there are shelves with free books and trays for muddy shoes, and there is a unit with dog towels. To the left is the door into the hall.

Hall

The hall leads to the other ground floor rooms including the accessible Tolkien suite and the dining room.

There is space in the hall for a mobility scooter to park and a socket for recharging.

There are automatic sensor-triggered lights in communal areas so you needn’t grope for lightswitches.

Tolkien Suite

This is the entrance to the Tolkien suite. The doorway is standard width (76cm).

Our doors have fire door closers which can make them heavy to open so we have fitted a hook on the door to this room to make it easier for people with disabilities to get in and out.

The sliding door to the ensuite is opposite the door to the room.

The Tolkien room has wide clear aisles to make it easier for folk with mobility issues to move around. One of the armchairs is an electric riser-recliner. The TV (on the right of the photo) can be turned for watching in double bed or in the sitting area.

There is a fridge, kettle, and refreshments, spare fleece throws and extra pillows in the blanket chest.

Accessible Ensuite

The Tolkien ensuite has been fitted with “Doc M” compliant toilet, hand basin, and grab rails. There is a sturdy fold-out shower seat and hand rails for the wet-room style shower area too. The taps, shower controls and toilet flush are easy to grasp and operate. The shower has rainfall (overhead) and handheld fittings.

Carer’s Room

Next-door to the Tolkien suite we have a single room which is ideal for a carer if needed.

Our Virginia Woolf “Room of One’s Own” is a stand-alone room with its own ensuite shower room, bookable separately to the Tolkien room.

Stairs

For those going upstairs, we have clear, well-covered, well-lit stairs with handrails each side.

As with all the communal areas, the lighting is activated by sensors on the stairs and landings.

Lighting

There are sensor-activated lights for the hallway, stairs and landings so they are well-lit when in use.

All our rooms have task lighting such as reading lamps as well as central lighting, and thick curtains, so you can control the level of light in your room.

Heating and Cooling

The entire building has central heating and each radiator is thermostatically controlled with clear numbersto make it easy for guests to adjust.

Additional heaters, fleece blankets, and fans are available in each room.

Every bedroom has at least one opening window.

Information and Communication

We will welcome you in person and show you to your room. We’re happy to help with luggage if needed.

Our Guest Information booklet is available in larger print in our Tolkien room (and can be given in other rooms on request). We’re happy to provide the information verbally and to talk through the breakfast menu if helpful.

If there is anything we can do to make communication easier for you – for example, making sure we are facing you when we talk – please do let us know. Pen and paper are available in the hall and rooms to aid communication.

Free fast WiFi is provided throughout.

Social concerns

We have just six guest rooms and the maximum number of guests when we are full is 11. As guests choose their own breakfast times, it’s unusual for all the guests to be in the dining room at the same time, but we do understand that some guests may wish to avoid being in a busy dining room. We’re happy to discuss the seating arrangements and timings to try to create a quieter experience for you.

We play some quiet background music in the breakfast room which we’re happy to adjust on request.

Allergies and intolerances

If you have a food allergy, intolerance, or coeliac disease please let us know. We have gluten-free alternatives for all but one item on our cooked breakfast, we stock a gluten-free cereal, and we’re happy to provide gluten-free bread. We’re happy to discuss the menu and ingredients to create a delicious breakfast for you.

We do have to let you know that all our food is made in a kitchen that also handles flour, nuts, celery, soya, so we cannot completely rule out the presence of allergens.

There is no down or wool in our bedding.

Emergencies

The building is fitted with a fire alarm with sensors in all rooms and emergency lighting. For guests with hearing difficulties we can provide a light-up doorbell in your room so that we can raise you in the unlikely event that we need to evacuate the building.

If you will need help to evacuate the building please do let us know. We live on site so – though of course there are occasions when we go out – we are generally around and happy to help.

Taxis

Wheelchair-accessible taxis: Wheelchair Taxi Company.

Equipment Hire

Hire mobility equipment or a scooter for your stay from EasyscootNew Ability, or Cavendish –  all say they can deliver equipment to your guest house and collect at the end of your holiday.

There are Shopmobility stores in Paignton and Torquay that rent scooters by the day.

Accessible Activities

See our Choose your own adventure for details of accessible activities in the Bay.

We’ve included access information on our Things to See and Do and our list of vegan-friendly eateries.

Things not covered here

We’ve tried to provide a general access guide here, but of course people’s individual needs vary hugely. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch to discuss how we can make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
