Vegan-friendly Torbay

We always suggest using the HappyCow app to research vegan-friendly places when travelling – you’ll find listings for vegan, vegetarian and veg-options places including chain cafes and restaurants that offer some vegan options.

However, we are often asked for our own recommendations so here they are:

Paignton

  • Tam’s Kitchen: a 100% vegan café in Winner Street offering vegan fast food during the evening. Sometimes has other events and classes on, so do check their Facebook and book in advance if possible. Entrance has a small step. Mention you are staying here for a 10% discount! D V
  • The London Fryer: local chippy serving vegan banana blossom “fish”, battered sausages, and looking at adding more vegan options in future. They have a seating area for eating in. You can also take away to the beach or bringing back to The Miggi, or have food delivered too. D
  • The Boathouse: on the seafront at Preston Sands, with seating inside and out by the sea wall, the Boathouse has a couple of vegan options and oat milk for drinks. A D
  • Rugga Coffee: kiosk under Paignton pier. A proportion of the proceeds go to mental health charities. Usually has one or two vegan bakes, smoothies, and bagels. A D
  • Ella’s café: part of Rowcroft charity shop, raising funds for our local hospice. On the Preston part of Torquay Road, about 5 minutes walk from The Miggi, Ella’s usually has a good choice of vegan cakes, a couple of hot options, a daily soup, and the salad bar is all vegan. Eat in or takeaway to the beach nearby. A D
  • Harbour Light: restaurant built into the harbour wall with views across the water. Lift to upper floor restaurant (can fit a mobility scooter). Vegan options include banana blossom fish and chips. A D
  • Costero Lounge: branch of the Lounge chain on the seafront near Paignton pier. Open daytime and evening. Separate vegan menu. A D
  • Gaia Café: coffee shop in Winner Street, friendly small independent café that roasts its own coffee and hosts various community groups. We buy our breakfast coffee from Gaia. Good vegan options. A D
  • Coffee No 1: part of a chain, this town centre café has some vegan options, including giant teacakes and cake.  A D
  • Shoreline: restaurant on the seafront that backs onto the Vue Cinema and looks out to sea. Unfortunately up a flight of steps, no lift. A few vegan options including pizza, usually a vegan dessert available too. D
  • The Ship: Five minutes’ walk from The Miggi, on Manor Road, this chain pub offers reasonably-priced vegan options for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. A D

Torquay

  • Amici: Town centre Italian restaurant with separate vegan menu. Indoor and outdoor seating. A D
  • Rock Garden: town centre pub-restaurant with large beer garden. Vegan options including burgers, pizza, etc. A D
  • Indi-Yang: fusion food restaurant with lots of vegan options, including mock meat versions of dishes, naan and so on. A D
  • Visto Lounge: branch of the Lounge chain on the seafront in Torquay with their usual range of vegan options on a separate menu. A D
  • Cantina Torquay: cafe-bar near Torre Abbey with vegan options. A D

Goodrington

Cantina: At the dog-friendly end of Goodrington Beach, just by the park, Cantina is a very popular café with several vegan options including cake. Seating inside or outside. A D

Broadsands

Venus Cafe: Large menu with a good vegan section. Seating with views across the beach. A D

Brixham

Old Market House: overlooking Brixham harbour, this large cafe-bar is part of the same chain as Harbour Light in Paignton, offering several vegan options. A D

Le Petite Maison: French Bistro on the quayside with a few vegan options.

Totnes

  • Tempt Chocolate Shop: 100% vegan chocolate shop. Fancy hand-made chocolates, luxurious hot chocolates. A D V
  • Dosa stall at the market: highly recommended vegan dosa stall at Totnes Market in the civic square (not everyday) A D V
  • Zappa’s: vegetarian café on the High Street offering a wide range of dishes – mostly vegan – pies, bakes, cakes, and hot dishes. A D
  • Seeds 2: vegetarian buffet cafe on the High Street. Mix of hot and cold dishes, most vegan – fill and refill your plate. A D
  • The Hairy Barista: mostly vegan coffee shop with toasties, croissants, cakes. Seating inside and in a large garden at the back. About 3 steps up to the front door. D
  • China Blue: on the road between Totnes and Dartington, China Blue is a large gift shop, paint-your-own ceramics studio, and café with vegan options. Free parking. A D

Dartington

The Big Kebabski: 100% vegan kebab van serving delicious kebabs, rice bowls, sexy spuds, next to the Clash bar at the Cider Press Centre (arty craftly shops to browse, and a lovely riverside walk). Free parking for up to 2 hours. Tables inside and outside. Do check their socials before travelling. A D V
