We’ve made The Miggi as accessible as possible, creating a fully wheelchair-accessible suite on the ground floor (Tolkien), with a single room next-door that might suit a carer if needed.
We’ve found some fantastic local accessible activities for our guests to enjoy – including sailing, hiking, and a scenic steam train trip.
Day One
Arrive at The Miggi. Settle into your comfy, book-themed room, enjoy a welcome cuppa, and perhaps choose a book to read from our shelves.
A two-minute stroll to our local beach to walk on the sand and watch the waves is soothing at any time of day, and a great way to stretch your legs if you’ve been sitting in a car or train all day.
Pick up a vegan smoothie, coffee, or ice cream from the blue Sara’s at the Beach shack in the row of beach huts, or a drink from the terrace bar of the Redcliffe Hotel at the end of our road – the hotel has an interesting past and quirky design, and the sweeping view of the bay from their terrace is fabulous.
In the evening, enjoy a freshly-cooked meal made by Phoenix of All Good Things, served in our Agatha Christie dining room (book in advance with Phoenix).
Day Two
Start your day with a hearty breakfast to set you up for a day out on the river. DartSailAbility is a charity that enables anyone, of any age, with a physical or mental disability to enjoy sailing and boating activities on the River Dart. Some of their boats can accommodate wheelchairs and they have hoists to give easy access to other craft – from racing dinghies to river cruises. Open days depend on volunteers so do check their website and book in advance.
After your sail, head along the seafront past the Victorian Paignton Pier, to Harbour Light for banana blossom “fish” and chips. Built into the harbour wall, Harbour Light’s dining room and roof terrace (there’s a lift for access) have views of the harbour one side and the sea on the other.
On Sundays there is a local maker’s market at the harbour – look out for the Curious Crumbs stall for some tasty vegan and gluten-free treats!
Day Three
After your delicious breakfast, take the steam train to Kingswear and ferry across the Dart to Dartmouth. For wheelchair and scooter users, the steam train has an accessible carriage and alternate ferries across to Dartmouth have ramps.
Arriving back in Paignton, treat yourself to a meal at Tam’s Kitchen, our local vegan cafe (dogs welcome, accessible but has narrow doorway). Do mention that you’re staying at The Miggi!
Day Four
After your Miggi breakfast, get off the beaten track with a Tramper off-road mobility scooter. You can rent a Tramper to explore two local sites:
Stover Country Park is a Site of Special Scientific Interest with 114 acres of woodland, heathland, grassland, lake and marsh.
Dartington Hall Estate has 25 acres of Grade II listed gardens, 500-year-old trees, and riverside paths next to woodland with deer.
Day Five
Make sure you start the day with a hearty Miggi breakfast because you’ll head out on the open waves today with the Torquay Disabled Sailing Association.
They have two sea-going yachts which have been specially adapted for people with disabilities, and a special ramp for those who use wheelchairs to get aboard. Like Dart SailAbility, this is a volunteer-run organisation so you need to check when they have trips going out and book in advance.
For your evening meal, check out our list of places with vegan options in Torbay or book another delicious meal by Phoenix of All Good Things, served in our Agatha Christie dining room (book in advance with Phoenix).
Day Six
Once you have enjoyed a relaxed breakfast, collect a delicious packed lunch from Phoenix of All Good Things, and head out to explore wild and historic Dartmoor.
The Dartmoor Wheeled Access Group lead public guided walks on certain dates, and have worked with the National Park to develop a “Miles without Stiles” list of accessible routes.
For your evening meal, check out our list of places with vegan options in Torbay.
Last day
Our hearty breakfast should set you up for your journey home. Although your room check-out time is 11am, you’re welcome to leave your bags a little longer so you needn’t rush too much – there’s always time to pop to the beach and say goodbye to the sea (until next time).
